cahokia hots
August 29th, 2008 by rcohenThis week was our Cahokia 9th Grade Integration Unit. We have done a lot and Cahokia Mounds was very interesting. We have been assigned High Order Thinking Skills projects. I chose the #3 choice which are analogies. The description was Compare the Cahokia Site of Mississippian times to Contemporary Saint Louis as Urban Centers: note similarities and differences. Use Comic Life to Show your comparison. I used the Comic Life program to demostrate the differences and some similarities of modern day St. Louis to Cahokia in the Mississipian times. I used many comparisons that I learned solely by going to Cahokia many times. My pictures were pictures that I took from the archive of pictures taken on the Cahokia trip.
I have been to Cahokia Mounds many times. This was probably my fourth trip. All of my information that I posted was learned by visitng Cahokia and my previous knowledge. I made comparisons of technolgy. I said that Cahokia’s technology included stone knifes and axes . Today in St. Louis we have metal axes and everything else more advanced. I said that Cahokia had a ruler and one person was most powerful. Today in the United States we have a democracy and a government. Other things I mentioned included that they buried people in mounds, while we bury people in cemeteries; that we have many food sources and options, but they only had corn and limited animals. One other interesting thing that Cahokia was a wood henge used as a calendar system, while today we have electronics as our calendar systems. There were many other comparisons.
Cahokia was a very interesting place. Learning about how they lived and what they did really makes modern life seem way better. What I mean by that is that they lived poorly with little food etc. and today we have everything and possibilities are endless. We have so many more opportunities than they had. Eg. we have the opportunity to travel anywhere because we have planes, cars, and boats. They did not have the oppurtunites. The Mississipians may not have known the greater extense of the world around them. We are very priveleged to have everything that we have.
